Narrative Writing Escape Room

Getting students hooked on writing is always a challenge. For many students, thinking of an idea can be intimidating. A blank piece of paper and being told to ‘write whatever you want’ can be a total nightmare for many students.

While teaching 11 and 12-year-old students, I found that they actually loved writing – they just didn’t love getting started. This is what inspired me to create Narrative Writing ‘Escape Rooms’.

These activities have a few key features that inspire students:

  • A theme
  • A story starter
  • A character or character inspiration
  • Puzzles that create plot choices
  • Spaces to write segments of the story

Students love the pre-made structure of these activities. It gives them the confidence to continue a story.

The puzzles have many benefits for reluctant writers:

  • It’s like a mini brain break
  • The writing is less intimidating
  • Students get a bit ‘distracted’ from the fear of writing
  • It gives students a chance to think critically and creatively

The puzzles are a really enjoyable way to continue the story and ‘unlock’ the next part of the narrative.

Narrative Writing Escape Rooms are really fun to make! You can make your own by thinking of a story, ideas to continue it, and puzzles that will engage students.

Check out some Narrative Writing Escape Rooms here. I am working on a few more themes, so stay tuned. I am always welcome to feedback, suggestions, and ideas for themes!
