🧾Narrative Writing: Choices Challenge ✏️
Do your students hate writing? Or do they just hate getting started? So many students have amazing potential to write incredible stories. But they freeze at the sight of blank paper.
This Narrative Writing: Choices Challenge activity removes the burden of getting started. This fantasy-themed resource includes a 2 page story starter. The story starter immediately puts students into the action. It allows their imagination to flourish without thinking of “what can my story be about…”

There are 8 additional writing pages with plot prompts. That’s right – 8 pages of writing prompts! Even better, each prompt includes 3 plot choices. The students complete that section, choosing from 3 options, as they continue the story.
Once students choose a plot prompt, there is a scaffolded template to write in. This template goes beyond just a space for students to draft. Rather, it includes guided notes and prompting ideas to help students write with detail and rigor.

This comprehensive writing resource gives students everything they need to draft a successful narrative. This resource helps students succeed right away, offering them the fantasy-genre, story starters, and plot prompts. Oh, and it comes in a printable OR digital format, so you can cater to all learning needs in your classroom.

📖Additional Reading Resources🍵
Alongside the Fantasy-themed Narrative Writing Choices Challenge activity, I have two companion reading activities. The story starter and prompts in the narrative writing task are the foundation for these reading resources.
I created these to show students the end goal of the drafting and writing process. These resources are also here to support teachers in showing a finished writing product.
This is a short story with comprehension questions. There are 8 pages in this story. Each page has 5 ‘wh’ reading comprehension questions. It is an enjoyable fictional story that students will feel confident reading independently. This resource is perfect to use alongside the narrative writing task to show students how they can build on each plot prompts.
Short Story 📖🧾
This is a 25-page full length short story. It builds upon the reading comprehension story, adding details to turn it into a complete reading experience. This resource comes with a story elements graphic organizer.
Students can use this resource as a way to analyze characters and summarize through a plot diagram. This supports students in their reading skills as well as their writing skills. It always helps to see an end product to understand the writing process!
I’m so grateful that you took the time to read this! I am passionate about inspiring students to write and helping teachers have successful writing lessons. There is nothing more deflating than students rolling their eyes and complaining they’re bored (trust me, I’ve been there!).

Happy writing and teaching!
